Accessible and Inclusive Tourism

3.0 Themes

3.6. Awareness and marketing

Consistent and clear marketing is vital in raising awareness of accessible and inclusive offerings by tourism businesses. Quite simply, if a business is accessible and inclusive but yet fails to talk about it clearly and consistently through its marketing channels, it's impossible for a visitor with a disability to easily find out, share and most importantly book. By showcasing inclusive features and accessibility initiatives, tourism businesses can reach a broader audience, including individuals with disability, their families, friends and carers, fostering greater engagement and loyalty. Highlighting accessible and inclusive attractions, providing dedicated accessibility guides, equipment galleries or inclusive certifications assures potential visitors that their needs will be accommodated. This builds trust making it easier to plan and book.

As a sign of great progress, in 2021, Tourism Australia announced a $12 million content creation initiative aimed at supporting tourism businesses across Australia to drive increased visitation by helping them to better market their experiences and attractions. The National Experience Content Initiative (NECI) provided a suite of new imagery and footage for up to 1,500 tourism experiences from across Australia. A key component of NECI was ensuring that accessibility and inclusivity initiatives were identified and showcased. This meant that across the Tourism Australia and state and territory tourism content libraries, there is now a huge supply of accessible and inclusive content available for industry. This has filled a major gap which was identified in our earlier editions and a major barrier raised by people with disability in having and seeing themselves in content.

Phillip Island and Phillip Island Nature Parks, Victoria

In 2022, Phillip Island (Millowl) became the first Australian destination to be certified sensory inclusive. This achievement was made possible through a partnership between Phillip Island Nature Parks and global organisation KultureCity to provide a sensory inclusive environment and specialised training for staff. At the Nature Parks, each attraction has its own accessibility page with detailed guides on mobility, wheelchair access, sensory features, social stories, assistance animals and companion cards.

The iconic Penguin Parade is set to bring visitors closer than ever to Phillip Island’s beloved little penguins with significant redevelopments to be completed ahead of summer 2024 specifically for visitors with disability. The popular Penguins Plus viewing platform has been revamped to optimise visitor experience with better access ramps and improved accessibility, while a new outbound boardwalk will provide improved accessibility and a more inclusive experience for all visitors. The accessible boardwalk will offer a seamless pathway for visitors to the east stand and a looped experience for everyone to enjoy.

Visit the Tweed, New South Wales

Visit Tweed offers a dedicated 'Accessible Holidays' page that highlights the best accessible food, drink, accommodation, touring and transport options in the region, making it easy for visitors to plan inclusive holidays. In August 2024, Tweed Shire Council announced a collaboration with Cycling Without Age to bring an innovative and inclusive service to the Northern Rivers Trail. The trishaw cycle service allows people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the trail, fostering community connection and enhancing access. This initiative aligns with the broader theme of accessibility by not only recognising inclusive businesses but also simplifying the process for visitors to explore all available experiences and accommodations when visiting Tweed.

Ripples n Tonic, Victoria
